The Alpaca Wool Care Guide

We design our beanies for adventuring so it's highly likely that your hat may get dropped in a puddle or splashed with a little mud at some point. If this happens please refer to this guide and remember to never put your beanie in the washing machine or tumble dryer.  As one one of the most precious natural fibres you can buy, alpaca wool requires a little specialist care to keep it looking as good as new.

How to wash your Nørlo Beanie?

Our beanies are crafted from 100% Premium, RAS Certified, Undyed Alpaca Wool and must be hand washed or dry cleaned. Luckily they are naturally hypoallergenic and odour resistant so they shouldn't need washing very often, if you do wish to clean your hat follow the steps below for perfect results. Alternatively you can dry clean your beanie.

  1. Dissolve a few pumps of mild detergent or shampoo in warm water and soak the beanie for 5-10 minutes. (Do not use bleach or fabric softener).
  2. Gently press and squeeze the hat to flush the soapy water through the fibres, do not rub as this will damage the hat. Repeat this step a handful of times.
  3. Gently rinse the hat in clean, warm water until it runs clear, press to remove excess water. Do not ring out or stretch the beanie.
  4. Unroll the rim of the beanie hat and lay it flat on a towel then press gently to remove as much water as possible. Lay the beanie flat to dry in its natural shape.
  5. Voilà, a fresh, clean beanie.

How to reshape your Nørlo beanie?

Alpaca wool is incredibly elastic for a natural fibre however even the highest quality knitted garments may loose their shape with heavy use. Luckily, one of the coolest features of alpaca wool is that you can steam it back to its original shape, tightening up the fibres.

To do this simply steam the hat with a steamer or an iron on a 'wool' setting until it becomes damp, if using an iron hover just above the wool- don't press down.

Once the hat is damp squeeze and press it into its original shape and leave to dry. Repeat this process until you are happy with the results.
